Announcements for 16.2

BRAND NEW! Submitting Copyedited Manuscript

Going forward, when you have completed a copyediting job, please submit the copyedited manuscript through the Copyediting Discussions section on the copyediting page in OJS by attaching it to a message to the editor. Please DO NOT upload the copyedited manuscript to the Copyedited section of the copyediting page.

Article Type Heading for Research and Review Articles

On research articles of either type, be sure the heading at the top of the first page reads Research Article or Review Article--whichever is appropriate--and not simply Article. Some confusion has existed on this point in the past (count me in on that confusion) and even the publication manual used to show simply Article in the page on formatting for articles. I think the idea there was that the example was generic, but it could be interpreted in other ways.

Update on APA 7E

I have updated to APA 7E all the reference examples in the publication manual. If you happen upon something I missed, don't hesitate to let me know.

Update (& Nevermind) on ORCIDs

EBLIP was able to add the ORCID plugin to the OJS platform so that authors will be asked for this information as part of the submission process. As a result, there is no need for ORCIDs to be included with the author information at the beginning of articles. All details about the changes in the 16.1 announcements have been removed from the Publication Manual.

Announcements for 16.1

ORCID IDs

Starting with the March (16.1) issue, EBLIP will include authors ORCIDs in the author information at the beginning of articles. The following changes no longer apply. SEE 16.2 UPDATES I have updated the Publication Manual’s formatting pages for all the article types to reflect this change. For example, here’s the formatting page for ESs and Classics: http://eblipmanual.pbworks.com/w/page/50410462/Evidence%20Summaries%20and%20Classics%20-%20Formatting

If you receive an article with this information missing, please query it asking the author to add their ORCID. It may be that the authors don’t have an ORCID and that’s why it’s not included, but it will be good to simply double check. The Instructions for Authors information on the EBLIP website now also includes information about ORCIDs and encourages authors to register.

Author Contributions

Issue 16.1 will also debut Author Contributions information for Articles (both research & reviews) and Using Evidence in Practice articles. These statements should be present on all articles of these two types of articles that have more than one author. (Obviously, if it’s a one-author article, we know who did all the work, so a statement isn’t needed!) The information should be placed after the text of the article but before the references section. Both formatting pages in the EBLIP Publication Manual have detailed information about how these should be formatted. For example, the Articles page is here: http://eblipmanual.pbworks.com/w/page/50005761/Articles%20-%20Formatting Two variations for how this might be formatted are provided.

The possible roles are a controlled vocabulary and based on CASRAI: https://casrai.org/credit/ So, there shouldn’t be any roles listed that are not part of the official list. If other roles are present during a copyedit, please adjust to the controlled vocabulary if possible (though you may not have sufficient information for that) or ask the authors to make the needed adjustments. Please also query the authors and the section editor if the information is missing. If the statement is missing, you may want to reference the Instructions for Authors page, which provides more guidance for authors. (It’s here closer to the bottom of the document: https://journals.library.ualberta.ca/eblip/index.php/EBLIP/guidelines). As indicated on the formatting pages, plan to bold the authors names and the colon following the names. Additionally, plan to capitalize the first word of the designated roles.

APA 7E

Volume 16 will also formalize EBLIP’s transition to APA 7E. Many of you have probably already started migrating to the new edition and that’s great! I’m in progress with updating the publication manual for this. There’s a good chance I won’t finish this until early February. The main changes that will affect EBLIP are how some of the references are handled. Two essential changes are that for in-text citations for any source with three or more authors can simply reference the first author’s name and et al. So, no more keeping track of initial and subsequent occurrences of the same source. (If needed to prevent confusion between sources, more author names can and should be included for the in-text citation.)

Once the EBLIP manual is updated, that should really be all you need, but if you’re interested and have a copy of the APA 7e you can peruse it if you like. If you don’t have a copy, there are a number of summaries available online highlighting the changes in the new edition. The Owl at Purdue has such a summary here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/apa_changes_7th_edition.html Primarily, we can probably focus on the items covered already by the EBLIP Publication Manual. We will not be changing the heading structure in EBLIP so you can skip that information from chapter 2 of EBLIP 7E. Many of the changes for the Reference List specifically are things EBLIP was already doing (e.g., not using the DOI label, using hyperlinks for DOIs and URLs).

Bias-Free and Inclusive Language

The APA 7E has some useful changes in this regard, but I’m mentioning this separately because more information will likely be forthcoming. The EBLIP Editorial Board will be discussing some of these considerations at their next meeting. After that, I may have more changes or information to provide in the EBLIP Publication Manual. As always, I’m happy to discuss any issue on this topic or any others that may arise while you are copyediting.
